As the birthplace of OU and a National Historic Landmark, Meadow Brook is an active and vital resource on OU’s campus and in the broader community.
In honor of Women’s History Month, Meadow Brook will feature a series of stories about the remarkable women who lived and worked here, beginning with the estate’s matriarch.
The daughter of a saloon-keeper, Matilda (Rausch) Dodge Wilson (1883-1967) was a self-made, modern woman of the 20th century who lived an all-American success story. She built a legacy as a businesswoman, preservationist, art collector, horsewoman, farmer and philanthropist. She founded Oakland University and Meadow Brook Hall, a National Historic Landmark.
The 1929 Club is an all-new giving program that will raise funds to support the care and preservation of the historic estate and our more than 75,000 artifacts.
Members will commit to donate $19.29 each month. We are kicking off with a focus on a major project—securing the $35,000 needed to restore the historic stained glass windows.
To do this, we are looking to get 150 people to commit to give $19.29 monthly for one year. Our first member is Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, who is here with a message to kick off the program.
Early in the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 4, Meadow Brook Hall staff discovered that one set of historic stained glass windows had been broken, in what appears to be a deliberate act of vandalism.
The damage is significant. Police are investigating and have released security camera footage of the suspect. Police said the suspect appeared to have kicked one window and smashed another window with an unknown tool.
One bright spot is that we recently secured an IMLS Grant to restore the stained glass windows this spring. Our work is in process and the conservator will reassemble and restore as much of the windows as possible and complete the rest of the restoration work as originally planned.
Today, Oakland University leadership and guests will discuss the future of education in a live broadcast. It’s a special reimagining of the Meadow Brook Seminar that was launched by OU founder & Meadow Brook Matriarch Matilda Dodge Wilson.
Now it is an event that will help refine what education by 2025 standards will look like for OU students and graduates going into the workforce. Click the link for the live broadcast that will run from 1-3 p.m. today.
