Last year, more than 400 active volunteers contributed 18,400 hours of service to Meadow Brook Hall, sharing their time and talents in countless ways. From docents, hosts, and Museum Store attendants to curatorial volunteers, Garden Club members, Squires, and Naturalists, our volunteers play an essential role in keeping Meadow Brook thriving. Their dedication helps preserve the Hall’s legacy while creating meaningful and memorable experiences for every visitor.
Volunteers who reached at least 50 hours of service during 2025 were recognized for their time and talent they generously shared with Meadow Brook. Sixteen volunteers celebrated milestone anniversaries, marking 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of service. The evening included a cocktail reception, a three-course meal prepared by Meadow Brook’s in-house chef, an awards ceremony, and live performances by Oakland University alumni, staff, and current students.
Each year, one volunteer receives the Barbara Thorpe Award, a merit-based honor presented to a volunteer selected by Meadow Brook staff for their exceptional generosity, dedication, and commitment to the Great Estate. The award honors the legacy of Barbara Thorpe, a longtime Meadow Brook volunteer. Like Barbara, recipients of this award embody a deep passion for service and a commitment to preserving Meadow Brook’s legacy for generations to come.
The 2026 Barbara Thorpe Award recipients, Richard (Rick) and Sue Jayroe, have exemplified that spirit of service throughout their years at Meadow Brook. Since beginning their volunteer service in 2016, both have become certified docents and hosts and have been active members of the Garden Club.
The Jayroes are always ready to step in wherever they are needed, regularly filling open shifts and sharing their time and talents across the Hall. Rick is a dedicated Squire who can be counted on whenever there is a project or task to be done. He also serves as secretary of the Squires, maintaining the official records of their meetings. Together and individually, Rick and Sue have given their time generously and embraced every opportunity to support Meadow Brook.
Meadow Brook Hall would not be the educational and community-centered institution it is today without the dedication of volunteers like Rick and Sue and the more than 400 individuals who give their time throughout the year. Their commitment, enthusiasm, and generosity help ensure that the Great Estate continues to thrive. We are deeply grateful for their continued investment in Meadow Brook’s future.
