Meadow Brook Wedding Feature: Nicole & Matt

Can you believe Nicole Vohs and Matt Szura’s Meadow Brook wedding almost didn’t happen?

The couple originally chose ultra-glam and romantic Lake Como, Italy, as the place for their destination wedding. Nicole and Matt flew over to Italy, chose a venue, and began the planning process. But when they came home to Michigan, they realized that planning a wedding across the ocean would be difficult.

“Many of our closest family and friends were not going to be able to attend, so we began searching for venues in Michigan,” Nicole said. “Meadow Brook was the first on my list, being an alum from OU, and knowing how beautiful everything was, I could not wait to show Matt. Finding a venue that even came close to our Lake Como dream wedding was going to be tough. Meadow Brook Hall is absolutely breathtaking, with its impeccable architecture, history, and romantic gardens, all secretly tucked away. It was a no brainer to have our wedding there. We felt like we had traveled to Europe.”

Creating a romantic, custom and personal wedding was a top priority for Nicole and Matt. Almost every aspect of their wedding was a nod to their love story: the invitations were inspired by their Paris engagement; ceremony and cocktail hour music was provided by the band that plays every Wednesday night at the location of Nicole and Matt’s first date, Silver Spoon Ristorante; the coconut buttercream wedding cake from The Home Bakery was inspired by the time Matt brought Nicole an entire sheet cake to her work instead of flowers!

The wedding day of June 7 was filled with classic elegance. Kaeli Garcia from Luna Soiree Events and Kate from New Creations Flower Co. transformed the Garden Tent into a romantic and elegant reception space filled with soft pink, white, and gold tones. Motor City Vintage rentals provided the newlyweds with a sweet ride that would’ve made the Dodge brothers envious. But for the couple, having the ceremony in the Pegasus Garden was the most important part of the day.

“John Legend’s ‘All of Me’ played as I walked down the aisle. He’s one of our favorites, we saw at the Meadow Brook Amphitheater a few years prior! It seemed fitting!” Nicole explained. “Mark Ephraim, our officiant, did an amazing job expressing the love Matt and I have for one another and what marriage means to us. It was probably my favorite part of the wedding. Becoming husband and wife, having our family and friends there to witness it, in the perfect setting, the Pegasus Garden, on the most beautiful day, was magical. I couldn’t stop smiling, and tried my best to hold tears of joy back.”
The perfect weather allowed guests to mingle outside on the Loggia Terrace for cocktail hour, and then dance the night away in the Garden Tent to the Blue Water Kings Band. At the end of the night, guests took their favors (stuffed dates from Bateel) back to their home or rooms at the Royal Park Hotel. But the thing that stuck out most for guests? The food!
“We received so many compliments about the food that night!” Nicole said. “Guests were blown away by how amazing the food was. Not very often do I hear people rave about their entrees at a wedding. A huge thank you to the catering team at Meadow Brook!”
