A Legacy of Celebration: The Meadow Brook Ball

Read more about one of Oakland University's most cherished student traditions in this Estate Story.

One of Oakland University’s most cherished traditions, the Meadow Brook Ball, has been a highlight on the campus social calendar since the early 1960s.

Originally called the “Scholarship Ball,” the event’s inaugural celebration took place in 1961 as a formal fundraiser to provide scholarships for incoming students. That first year, the ball raised over $40,000—a monumental sum for the time, with tickets costing $100 per couple, equivalent to over $400 today.

Though it has since shifted away from its fundraising origins, the event remains an iconic symbol of university life. Students eagerly await the annual gathering at Meadow Brook Hall, which features an ever-changing theme each year.

From lavish decorations to live entertainment, the Meadow Brook Ball captures the imagination of attendees, making it more than just an evening out—it’s a longstanding cultural milestone that connects generations of Oakland University students.

With its roots in generosity and its modern-day focus on community and celebration, the Meadow Brook Ball exemplifies the spirit of Oakland University, blending its historical legacy with the vibrancy of its student body.

Whether it’s a night of starry elegance or a fun-filled evening of dancing and socializing, the ball continues to be a must-attend event, cherished by all who experience it.

The 2024-25 Meadow Brook Ball will take place on March 28, 2025. The theme will be Sparkling Diamonds: An International Ball with James Bond. Follow the Meadow Brook Ball committee on Facebook for more information!
