In these challenging, and in our lifetimes unprecedented, days, those of us who believe that the past can inform the future can look to two of the arguably greater minds and leaders of the 19th and 20th Centuries, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill, for guidance . . . and in some measure, hope. They believed that there is a powerful force in adversity, and many of their words were voiced in situations of grave danger and consequences – the American Civil War and the Second World War.
Lincoln said: “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.”
And, Churchill said: “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”
Here at Meadow Brook, even as we carefully curtail activities, postponing and canceling events and public touring for the protection of visitors, volunteers and staff (check back to meadowbrookhall.org for the latest updates), we take inspiration from the legacy of the Dodge and Wilson families – stories of ingenuity, hard work, determination, pride in a job well done and compassion for the people who live and work in our communities.
We feel the values they embraced can inspire and teach us, our children and grandchildren about the core values that built America, ones we need so desperately today.
Let us hope that many can take comfort and inspiration in these values, which have helped thousands build better lives and a better community. We look forward to once again welcoming you to enjoy our Meadow Brook, a three-dimensional testament to the strength of the human spirit.
