For more than six decades, Oakland University’s first family has shaped the intertwined legacies of the university and their historic home, Meadow Brook Hall. Matilda R. Dodge Wilson and Alfred G. Wilson did not only establish the university — they helped to build the OU community we know and love today.

The descendants of the founding Dodge–Wilson family remain deeply engaged with Meadow Brook Hall, their legacy rooted in the special moments and lifelong memories that were created there.

They frequently return to visit, supporting its mission by sharing the family’s story with guests and volunteers and helping preserve cherished family artifacts.

Family Values of Kindness & Commitment

Matilda and Alfred instilled a strong work ethic and the values of kindness, responsibility, generosity and commitment in their children. The children were also taught the importance of education. Richard Wilson, their adopted son, was the last direct heir before he passed away in 2022.

He remained deeply connected to the estate throughout his life, sharing childhood stories, participating in special events and even using his plumbing company to repair the heating and plumbing systems at Meadow Brook. When asked the greatest lesson he learned from his parents, Richard said, “Being concerned about others and aware of others’ needs.” Today, his son Larry Wilson continues his father’s legacy through his ongoing engagement and support of Meadow Brook Hall.

When Richard’s younger sister, Barbara (Wilson) Eccles, passed away in 2020, her family generously donated treasured items to Meadow Brook Hall. These included photographs, letters, jewelry and historical clothing. Barbara’s family remains committed to future engagement and preserving these personal stories as part of the family’s living legacy.

John Van Lennep and his sisters Rikki and Judy, children of Frances Dodge, Matilda’s daughter from her first marriage to John Dodge, have also been long-time supporters – faithfully contributing to Meadow Brook Hall and supporting its vibrant volunteer community. Their ongoing dedication helps connect Meadow Brook Hall’s rich history to a thriving future for generations to come.

OU Offers New Course All About Matilda

In honor of Oakland University’s first family and their pivotal role in the university’s history, OU is now proudly offering a course dedicated to exploring the life and legacy of Matilda Dodge Wilson. The course, appropriately titled “Matilda Matters” is offered through The Honors College. It will be taught at Meadow Brook Hall by Randall Engle, Ph.D., director of the Christianity studies program and 2025 recipient of the university’s Teaching Excellence Award.

Oakland University remains deeply appreciative of the family’s continued commitment to the campus community and, in particular, Meadow Brook Hall. Their dedication — through philanthropy, preservation and participation — embodies the resilient spirit of Matilda Dodge Wilson that continues to inspire students, staff and visitors alike.
